The first professional body piercing I got was my septum piercing. I remember being a little anxious, but mainly excited. My, mom, my sister, and I headed to our local tattoo and piercing shop, Tattoo Tom’s in Shelbyville, TN. Tom was a nice guy, very friendly and funny.
“This one is gonna be a cruncher,” He said to me. I laughed kind of nervously. My sister started filming so she would have the video for later. I guess as either an honorable shot of my bravery or a humiliating video of me crying. She would have preferred the latter, for sure.
So Tom then cleans my septum area and marks where the needle will go. Then he shows me the forceps. Since I had expressed an interest in wanting to learn the trade of piercing after high school, he explained every step to me.
“You want to put this above the cartilage in the soft tissue. Your sweet spot. Don’t hit the cartilage.” With those words he adjusted the forceps, asked me if it felt comfortable, then shoved a needle through my nose. The pain wasn’t actually bad at first. I felt a little crunch and my eyes watered. A few seconds later, it started hurting like a bitch. It felt like this burning feeling in my nose and went away after a few minutes. Tom put the ring in, tightened and adjusted it, screwed on the other ball, cleaned it, and I was on my way.
“You’re all pierced out now.” He told me.
As for healing, I cleaned it twice a day with a saline solution I made with water and sea salt. It was really sore and had little crust forming on the ring for a few weeks. After that, I was good. I could flip it up for school, change to a black ring, which is my favorite, and everyone was happy.
This was two years ago and I still have my septum piercing. It is one of my favorite piercings that I have and I plan on keeping it for many, many more years. After my first piercing, I was hooked. All thanks to my beautiful little septum ring.
