I love the tribal look – the edgy, raw, natural materials, the emphasis on placement and incorporation of your anatomy over flash and bling. It’s not what you think of when you think of timeless looks, but it’s probably the most timeless of them all, taking us back to times and places with a strong emphasis on culture and heritage.

I’m a firm believer that you don’t have to have the ancestry to appreciate the beauty of other cultures though, and as such, I enjoy tribal body jewelry and tattoos from a slew of other cultures. I’m a girl that likes Nordic tattoos, and strong, bold body jewelry looks, so I’ve put together a collection of some of the coolest looks from FreshTrends.

I once got really frustrated with how non-dangly my plugs were, so I improvised, adding a bear claw and feather charm. It was pretty crazy looking, but I kind of loved it. That belly button ring with the horn charm has me swooning – I love when the most beautiful, badass parts of nature are incorporated into body jewelry.

Tribal body jewelry is so undeniably sexy and fierce, and it’s that way on either sex – men look rugged and cut with this type of jewelry, and on women, it’s a bold statement of a warrior goddess – feminine, yet fierce.

The majority of the tribal styled jewelry I see is for plugs, but as more people look at this style to define themselves, we’re seeing nipple jewelry, cartilage cuffs, septum rings, and even fake clip-on jewelry take after this more intricate approach. Tribal jewelry usually encompasses more patterns, less bling, and an emphasis on repeating shapes, symmetry, and patterns.

What I really love about this style is the way you can mix and match your jewelry with it – when you’re looking at tribal ensembles, everything being made out of the same material is so boring. When there’s a variety, the look doesn’t appear random or sloppy, and each piece stands out on its own, like a collector’s item from a nomadic body jewelry enthusiast.

I particularly love pairing dark, organic wooden jewelry with shining gold and iridescent opals – it’s a combination that is eye catching and marvelously adventurous, and still feminine enough to style with my usual boho tops and skirts.
