During the last decade, the Steampunk style of jewelry has become very popular. A response to the passing of Goth, punk and other industrial fads, Steampunk jewelry emphasizes beauty as it reflects unusual or antiquated ideas, particularly from the Victorian era. Sometimes these jewelry designs are bold, but they never lose their appeal.
The Steampunk culture speculates on how different the world would be if steam power had reigned supreme. Fantasy and science fiction blend and these two elements are also reflected in the jewelry, which is often dark and has a “salvaged” appearance.
Decorative skeleton keys, old pill cases and tiny knives are also common jewelry motifs. In addition, clock parts are often used for other jewelry pieces.
Favored colors are: brass, bronze, copper, dark gunmetal, brushed aluminum, titanium, ecru, rich browns and shades of gray. Bright colors are never used for they have too modern a look. Jewelry is usually handmade, and even though many pieces are expensive ($100 or more), there are jewelers who produce quality pieces that are more affordable.
