Rings, necklaces and bracelets have been accepted for centuries, but body jewelry is often viewed as unconventional. To some extent, this is a function of the culture where the observation is made. In any given corporate office on Wall Street, eyebrow rings and tongue piercings will be virtually nonexistent. There won’t be many nose rings displayed at the lawyer’s office, nor will labrets be worn by the lead character in any of next year’s major Hollywood films. In other venues, body jewelry may be the norm rather than the exception. 

You probably already know this, but dermal piercings aren’t just for daredevil teens or angst-filled college students. Society as a whole is still slightly bothered by tattoos and piercings, but a few beautiful celebs are showing the world that extreme piercings can fit into the mainstream world just fine. From reality stars to athletes, dermal piercings and implants are showing up on the faces and bodies of famous folks across the nation.

There’s no question that piercings and body modification are the rage. It seems like everywhere you look, someone is getting a new piercing, a fresh tattoo, or some new creative modification. Are piercing and body mod a form of art?

Asia Argento, despite her name, is actually an Italian actress. She has performed in movies shown around the world and won numerous awards. She also writes short stories and directs films. When this lovely lady isn’t working, she’s out getting pierced and tattooed. Currently, she has a surface piercing on the nape of her neck, just below a tattoo of the number 23. Belissima.

We all want the world to notice us — not just to look at us, but to know who we really are. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, but body modification gets us noticed a little more quickly. Tattoos and piercings give the quick version of our personalities before we even open our mouths.

Tattoos have been around for a while. Literally. When in 2005 the discovery of a pre-Incan woman’s mummy in Peru came to light – the insight gained, yet again on the ancient practice of tattoos, left for some very interesting conversation. Clearly visible in photographs, the tattoos of a serpent, spider and nocturnal animals seen and captured on film are equally as exciting as they are mysterious.

Most of the big name designers had some truly unique offerings in the shoe department this season, the perfect foil to the glamorous and feminine spring lines. Alexander McQueen’s collection of whimsical designs took centre stage, with its butterflies, ears of corn and other unusual accoutrements. Prada showcased some amazing sporty wedges, Chanel had velvet wedges to die for, and everywhere there were leopard print platform heels and sky-high python stilettos.

Spring is coming, and we can’t wait to stow away those heavy coats and bring out some fabulous new spring outfits. And accessories-wise, we’re spoilt for choice!
