It might seem strange that a company that sells body jewelry would say that there are reasons not to get a piercing, but the fact is that we care about your body, and we want to make sure that you’re making safe and healthy choices.

Part of the reason why we focus on fine body jewelry is because it looks amazing and it’s safe for your skin, even if you struggle with skin sensitivities. Therefore, we always advocate for responsible piercing practices, including the choice to forego piercing if it’s not for you.

If you’ve been thinking about getting a piercing, but you’re not 100% sure, here are some of the wrong reasons to get pierced.

Your significant other thinks it’s sexy

Piercings are one of the ultimate forms of individual expression, and as such, they should be done for you and only for you. Never get a piercing because someone pressures you to get one.

If your significant other thinks they’re hot, and you’ve always dreamed of having an edgy septum piercing, then hey, it’s a win-win! But, if it’s something that you never considered until your partner mentioned that it would look good on you, then think long and hard about whether it’s something that you truly want or if it would be for your S.O.

Be your own person. Your partner might want you to get a piercing, but make sure that it’s what you really want.

Even if you know that you’re going to stay with your partner forever, you should never change your appearance for them, especially when it’s something semi-permanent like a piercing. Make sure that the choice is yours and yours alone.

A friend wants to “practice” their piercing skills on you

Good friends support each other in their endeavors. But, good friends should never ask you to put yourself in danger so that they can follow their dreams.

If you’ve been wanting a piercing for a while, and your friend is in a legitimate apprenticeship program at a reputable piercing studio, then go for it! That way, there will be professional supervision, and you’ll be getting a piercing that you really want.

If you haven’t been wanting a piercing, but your friend is in an apprenticeship program and starts pressuring you to get one, it’s okay to say no. Or, if your friend isn’t in an apprenticeship program but is confident in her abilities to pierce at home, absolutely say no; there’s so much that can go wrong with a piercing, and you should always get pierced by a professional or under professional supervision at a studio.

You want to do something impulsive after a breakup

After you’ve broken up with someone—or some massive life event has occurred—it’s common to want to change your looks, like get some bangs or dye your hair. Often, these choices can be regrettable.

If you’re going through a breakup, stick with the cliche and get some bangs. Wait to get pierced until you’re in a better headspace.

While your hair will grow back, getting a piercing is a little more permanent. If you’re feeling vulnerable, take a step back and wait for a little bit before you get that piercing. The studio will still be there in a month or two when your feelings are more under control.

You want to get pierced, but you can’t afford it

When you get pierced, it’s imperative that you choose a reputable piercer. This means that it will likely cost more than less qualified piercing studios.

When you shop for a piercer, price should not be your first consideration. You need to read reviews, check out their portfolios, and make sure that they are fully certified (bonus points if they’re a member of the Association of Piercing Professionals). If they check all of those boxes, then you can start choosing your piercer based on the price.

If you can’t afford a reputable piercer, save your money until you can. Beyond cleanliness, your piercer needs to place the piercing correctly, give you proper aftercare advice, and be available for consultation throughout the healing process. If you go for a budget piercer, you could be opening yourself up to some complications.

You’re uncomfortable with the piercing process

Overall, piercings are usually less painful than people anticipate. If you choose a reputable piercer, then they’ll walk you through the piercing process and give you breathing exercises to help minimize pain. The majority of pierced people report that the process is much easier than they thought it would be.

Woman looks nervous

There’s no shame in being afraid. If you’re too nervous about the piercing process, you shouldn’t feel pressured to go through with it.

That being said, even piercing veterans sometimes experience discomfort during the piercing process. You’re essentially inflicting a wound on your body, which means that you could have some surprising physical responses; nausea, faintness, or even losing consciousness aren’t uncommon. If you aren’t prepared to go through these possible side effects, then don’t do it.

What if I want the pierced look, but I don’t want the piercing?

Piercings aren’t for everyone, and that’s okay. Luckily, there are alternatives to getting a real piercing.

Faux hoops emulate the piercing look without actually undergoing the needle. You can test out all sorts of pierced styles, from lip piercings to cartilage piercings and nostril and septum piercings, without the semi-permanence of an actual piercing.

While faux hoops might seem a little like playing dress-up, we offer high quality hoops in 14k gold, so you can enjoy the beautiful, authentic look of the jewelry without the discomfort or long healing times of an actual piercing.

These hoops are also fantastic if you’ve been wrestling with the idea of a piercing, but you don’t know how it would look.

Before you get pierced, it’s important to consider whether it’s something that you actually want. Think long and hard, and when it doubt, invest in some faux jewelry to try out the pierced look.
