Although the fleur-de-lis has only been the official symbol of the state of Louisiana since 2008, the flower with three distinct petals has been associated with the city of New Orleans, a town like no other, for many years. It has been the logo of the New Orleans Saints since 1967.
Down through the centuries, the flower has become both a symbol of pride and dignity to the Acadian and Cajun cultures so prominent in The Big Easy and a religious symbol in which the three petals represent the Holy Trinity.
Mardi Gras is New Orleans’ glorious trademark. This celebration lasts about two weeks, begins on Lent and ends on the day before Ash Wednesday. It is the quintessence of everything New Orleans; spectacular parades, masquerade balls, scrumptious food, glorious colors, dazzling costumes and jazz music to die for.
Mardi Gras is on Tuesday, February 12th this year! You can also catch New Orleans in the news this weekend when it hosts Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday!
